De Noorse gitarist Gisle Torvik begrijpt de kunst van het weglaten, het suggereren, de durf om iets te spelen wat er helemaal niet is. Deze schijn paradoxale aanpak biedt open muziek, gevrijwaard van onnodig gepiel. Quasi herkenbare thema’s worden uitgewerkt op elektrische en akoestische gitaar en veelal aangevuld door bassist Audun Ellingsen en drummer Hermund Nygård.

De derde cd ‘Tranquil fjord‘ van gitarist Gisle Torvik is echt een gitaar album waar de akoestische en elektrische gitaar centraal staan: op een paar overbodige bas en drum solo’s na, is het de gitaar die de thema’s en solo’s speelt. Torvik, die zich aanvankelijk wilde beperken tot solo gitarist (in de stijl van Mark Knopfler), heeft uiteindelijk gestudeerd aan twee Conservatoria in Noorwegen en zich ontwikkeld tot een volwaardig muzikant en componist. Zijn Knopfler idioom heeft hij ingewisseld voor ‘n Pat Metheny kleur. Legendarisch Amerikaanse gitarist die een hele generatie musici heeft beïnvloed met zijn melodisch werk; niet in de laatste plaats door de toegevoegde waarde van zijn keyboardspeler Lyle Mays.
Gisle Torvik gaat zijn eigen muzikale weg. Hij is een sensitieve no-nonsense gitarist die een groot gevoel heeft voor sfeer, melodie en evenwichtige solo’s waarbij het thema steeds op de achtergrond aanwezig is. Torvik heeft een strak gitaargeluid, ferm touché en een uitstekende frasering waarmee hij prachtige muzikale zinnen maakt. Bijzonder fraai zijn de drie solo gitaar composities; intro ‘Før Bløming’, ‘Stille Song’ en het titelstuk ‘Tranquil Fjord’ waar de cd mee afsluit (en in trio bezetting mee opent). Hier en daar klinkt de muziek van Torvik wellicht iets te bedacht maar het is zijn muzikale spontaniteit die elke twijfel wegneemt.

Nordic guitar player Gisle Torvik understands the art of ‘dropping notes‘: he dare’s to play notes which aren’t there. A way to produce an open minded music, free from unnecessarily flow of tones. He plays remarkable tune’s on electric and acoustic guitar assisted by Audun Ellingsen on bass and drummer Hermund Nygård.
Gisle Torvik’s thirth cd ‘Tranquil fjord‘ is a real guitar album where electric and acoustic guitar are the center of the music. Though a few overflowing solo’s on bass and drums, the guitar plays the theme’s and the solo’s. Torvik, who at first wanted to be a solo guitarist, studied at two Music Schools in Norway and developed as a wonderful musician and composer. His Knopfler idea flew away and gave place for a Pat Metheny color. This legendary guitar player inspired a whole generation of musicians, assisted by his keyboardist Lyle Mays. Gisle Torvik finds his own musical way. He’s a sensitive and no nonsense musician with a great feeling for mood, melody and balanced solo’s where you always hear the theme resonating in the background. Torvik has a strong guitar sound, energetic touché and a excellent way of expressing the musical sentences. Extremely beautiful are the three solo guitar pieces intro ‘Før Bløming’, ‘Stille Song’ and the title piece ‘Tranquil Fjord’ at the end of the cd (the album opens with it in trio). Torvil’s music might sound a little invented, but the musical spontaneity removes all the doubt.
