English version

The Marios Strofalis Quartet plays film music in a South European background. Pianist Marios Strofalis (1969) composed for ‘European Taxim’ fifteen pieces for piano, accordion, violin and cello. Mostly West European music, written by this Greek composer.

Marios Strofalis was born in Athene. As a six year old child, he gets piano lessons and studies later piano, harmonizing, choir direction and composition at the National Conservatory. His musical study ends in Paris where Strofalis starts to compose for ensembles, writes music for theater and film and gives concerts. Today, he’s professor at the Conservatory and adviser for ‘Technopolis’, both in Athene. About ten years ago he started thinking about the project ‘European Taxim’, initiated with his friend and accordionist Vangelis Vergotis. The music from ‘European Taxim’ is divers: a South European mix of bolero, musette, flamenco tarantella and waltz. But there’s also a fine tango influence. Al these styles are arranged in a classical way and added with new harmonic variations and instrumentation. The cast is sober and the music fresh and open with the piano in the center. Special film music for a cult-movie. Not every composition is surprising and original. There are phrases recognizable form well known pieces like Paul Desmonds ‘Take Five’ (Monmarte), Piazolla’s ‘Libertango’ (Astor Tango) or ‘Tubular Bells’ of Mike Oldfield (Nut with Honey). But ‘European Taxim’ is still a wonderful album, recorded by an inventive musician and composer.
